Interview with Dominic Jukes

Dominic Jukes talks about why he loves volunteering at Canongate Youth Project.

Farewell!

The news today is that Neil Hyndman, Project Worker on the Options Plus lifeskills programme, will be leaving CYP on 9th September to further his studies in community education at Edinburgh University.

Good luck, Neil - you will be sadly missed!

Congratulations!

Our Options+ lifeskills programme achieved a 33% success rate for positive progressions in the last year. To put it into contrast, the average for Edinburgh for other lifeskills programmes was 13% and the Scottish average was 15%!

A special thank you to all those Options Plusers out there who put in so much effort and commitment to achieve these awesome outcomes!

CYP Live Music Fundraiser

We will be staging an exciting live music fundraising event at the Bongo Club at 7pm on 26th March, featuring the Hipple People, the Edinburgh Bhangra Crew and Moondawgs! Full details can be found on this downloadable poster.

Please hurry and book because seats are limited and they are going like hot cakes!

Petition to Save Edinburgh Jobless Services

We would cordially invite you to read CYP Options+ worker Neil Hyndman's open letter on the future funding of Options+ and then please sign the Save Edinburgh Jobless Services petition.

It will only take a minute of your time to do so and will we hope help to save vital funding that is at present in danger of being compromised.

Thank you!

CAST

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the closure of the CAST part of the Project from April 2010 due to a lack of funding. This extremely successful part of the Project (previously known as PILP - Preparation for Independent Living - offered a range of crucial services to teenagers over the past ten years.

We wish the staff from the Project every success in the future.

Music Developments

Thanks to the generosity of the Daisy Chain Fund we are delighted to announce that music tuition and access to our recording studio is now available to our Primary School age members.

For details of the clubs programme for 2009-10, see the Youth Work page.

Complaints Procedure

We have just published a new document giving details of how to lodge a complaint about CYP or any of our services and detailing the procedures involved in processing any complaints we receive.

Calling all budding musicians!

The CYP Music Club, which takes place every Monday evening between 6.45pm and 8.45pm (apart from school holidays and public holidays) would like to extend a welcome to anyone aged between 12 and 17 who has an interest in developing skills in drum kit, guitar, bass, singing and songwriting.

As well as these opportunities there is also the chance to access our professional standard recording studio (with the support of our recording engineer). You then have the option, if you want, to showcase your best tracks on this website and give your new musical career a boost!

The club costs 50p a week and is open to all 12 to 17 year olds living in our South Central Edinburgh catchment area. For further details contact Stevie Palmer (Project Worker) at CYP on: 556-9719

Living Memories

Two CYP members, Debbie Ramsay and Debbie Smith, who are trainees in CYP's Get Ready for Work programme have recently been featured in The Southsider because of their involvement in a project with Edinburgh's Living Memory Association.

This article details how they designed their project and the poster they produced on completion of the project highlights some of the differences between life in Edinburgh now and in "the olden days!"

Stuart Mair - Youth Services Manager of the Year 2008!

Stuart Mair

Undoubtedly the highlight of the Project year so far was our Project Co-ordinator, Stuart Mair being nominated for and winning the Scottish Voluntary Organisation’s Youth Services Manager of the Year award. His citation recognised the Project’s 30th anniversary and the fact that over 1200 volunteers have passed through CYP during that time.

On behalf of all the paid staff, volunteers, kids, parents and carers with links to the Project, well done Stuart and congratulations!!!
